WorkBee XYZ Touch Probe allows you to quickly and accurately set your work zero in the X, Y, and Z axes using the probing features built into the WorkBee Control Interface. With plug-and-play functionality, the probe can be easily connected when required and disconnected when not in use.
It can also be used to probe each axis individually, making it especially useful for resetting the Z-axis after a tool change. Manufactured from aluminium with a premium conductive anodised coating, the probe delivers precise and reliable contact when probing.

Application

It’s a great piece of kit but could be improved in a couple of simple ways.
1. The wires are not flexible enough and could be capable of pushing the probe off centre as the machine head moves.
2. The spade connecter sticks out beyond the corner of the probe and can interfere with any clamps used to pin the stock down.

Not sure about this yet. Great in principle. In practice I have had a few occasions where something slipped when probing the Z axis which causes a disastrous crash of the bit into the work before you can hit the emergency stop. I find myself increasingly just setting the work co-ordinates by eye, due to the time taken to get the probe out of the drawer, plug it in, attach the clip, position the plate, and complete the probe, before undoing everything.I would suggest changing the probe:
– have some bracket by the Z Axis stepper motor so the plate can be stored there between uses, and remain plugged in.
– Don’t use springy wire to attach to the plate, as this can move the plate as the milling head moves. Use some sort of soft coiled wire.
– Redesign the clip with longer and rigid arms so it is easier to clip onto small tooling.
– On the user interface, when probing, have an emergency stop option displayed so that the probe can be instantly aborted if things go wrong.
Update. Now given up on this, after the clip slipped when probing the Z axis, and broke a 1/16th bit.

Overall I am pleased with the touch probe but the wires are far too stiff and have broken at the touch plate connector a couple of times, the repair is to simply wire in a new connector but at some point I expect that I may need to replace the wires completely.

Very cleanly machined aluminium block (if a bit thin/light) and nice moulding to mount a good quality socket under the z-axis motor. Let down by quality/stiffness of the 2-core flex from block/croc clip to the plug. It really ought to be supplied using silicon insulated cable for flexibility as the xyz block (which is really very light) can end up being moved by it during zeroing sequence if you are not careful.

Excellent little tool and I can imagine that without setting up the machine for a job would be a challenge. Only grip is that the touch probe and clamp itself are joined by thin wire and some nice silicon cable that was more flexible would make it feel less delicate and more robust.

My only criticism is the cable supplied is slightly shorter than required in my opinion and the cable isn’t flexible so tends to move the probe when manoeuvring.
